The glow of Midsummer

Hello again,

In Denmark, summer doesn’t just arrive it lingers. It hangs in the air like golden honey, slow and sweet. And no evening captures that feeling quite like Sankt Hans Aften, our beloved Midsummer Eve. It’s the kind of night where time stretches, the sky glows, and the world seems to pause just to savor the light.

Held every June 23rd, Sankt Hans is a celebration woven into Denmark’s bones. Long before modern festivities, people gathered to honor the summer solstice, the year’s brightest turning point, when the sun lingers longest and shadows retreat. Today, those ancient rituals blend seamlessly with Danish hygge, making it one of the most cherished nights of the year.

Picture this: Bonfires flicker along the coastline, their crackling mingling with the salty breeze. Families and friends cluster on picnic blankets, singing "Midsommervisen", passing plates of homemade treats, and laughing under flower crowns (because why not?). In some towns, a straw witch, a symbol of banishing darkness tossed into the flames, sending wishes for brighter days ahead.

It’s a night of warmth, light, and togetherness with a tribute to tradition and the quiet magic of Danish summers. And for candle lovers like us, it’s a beautiful reminder: even the smallest flame can hold meaning.

Not everyone has a beachside bonfire at their doorstep, but the spirit of Sankt Hans can live anywhere. We recreate it with candles that echo midsummer’s essence: hints of sun-warmed wood, wildflower meadows, and distant sea spray. A cluster of tapers on the dinner table. A flickering jar candle by the window.

Because Midsummer isn’t just about celebration, it’s about pausing. Noticing how the light dances. Holding onto the moment before it slips away.

So here’s to long evenings, glowing flames, and the joy of traditions that tie us together.

With warmth,
The Nordtrice Team
