If you know the Danish traditions well enough, you learn that Fastelavn, our Carnival, is a little bit wild, a little bit sweet, and impossible not to love. It arrives just when winter feels endless and everyone is craving colour and fun. Suddenly the whole country is dressing up, eating buns, and hitting a barrel with a stick.
Kids show up in costumes that range from adorable to wonderfully chaotic. Adults pretend they are “only here for the children” but somehow end up eating most of the Fastelavnsboller. And the whole celebration has this homemade charm that makes it feel warm and real.
The buns are, of course, the stars of the show. Soft, fluffy, filled with cream or jam or custard, every bakery has its own version and every Dane has a favourite. We suggest you a few spots that we always recommend when friends ask where to go:
• Hart Bageri For the people who like their buns a little extra. Fluffy, generous, and always beautifully made.
• Andersen & Maillard Creamy, modern, and dangerously addictive. You’ve been warned.
• Juno the Bakery A classic with a cult following. Their Fastelavnsbolle sells out fast for a reason.
• Lille Bakery A more rustic, homemade vibe, the kind of bun that feels like a hug.
The barrel game is another classic. Long ago it involved a real cat, but thankfully that part is history. Today the barrel is filled with candy and decorated with a painted cat, and kids take turns hitting it until it bursts. It is loud, funny, and full of excitement.
Fastelavn is colourful, playful, and full of small rituals that bring people together — which is exactly why we love it at Nordtrice. It is the kind of day where a candle on the table feels just right. A soft glow next to the buns, a warm light while kids run around in costumes, a little moment of calm in the middle of the fun.
